Picking Time

The Big Island has many micro-climates which means that you can drive a few miles and the weather can be very different. We live on the side of one of 5 volcanoes on the island and just driving 2 or 3 miles can change the temperature by 5 degrees. Rainfall amounts can also vary a short distance away. Recently we have had a few hurricanes and tropical storms which added tremendous amounts of rain.

These items all add to the uncertainty of when an individual farm may start picking coffee. For some reason this year there also seems to be a lack of coffee pickers. As you can imagine, the larger the farm, the more pickers you need. Sometimes there is a family who picks and other times it might be a contact you have found who brings in a crew.

On this our first year on the farm we started with a picker and a half. No, that is not a person of challenged height but a friend and neighbor who helped the picker but also did tractor work. We have calls out for a crew of pickers and hope to ramp up the process in the next few days.

We will print our own coffee labels to start and have already received quotes for a printer to mass produce them.

Our online store is hidden at present as we finish adding items and credit card processing and so on.

With all that said, we should be selling coffee within a  month if all goes according to plan.
